Final Vision - Digital Artifact

As I contemplated a digital artifact many ideas went through my head. Originally I had thought I wanted to make an online 'Read Aloud'. I was excited that I could publish it online for to others to enjoy my chosen book. Copyright laws being what they are, I chose a new route. I didn't want to overstep any intellectual property rights, as I would have to use the work in its entirety for the purpose of a real read aloud.

So I changed gears a little bit, to a tech component that I have been putting off all year long with my students. Because of my love of books and promoting literacy to my students, I wanted very badly to be able to instruct them to create their own book trailer. Teachers in my school had previously done this and I felt a little impotent and that I did not have any experience. There were several times this year when I wasn't able to help and guide the students with their projects. I wanted to learn this fun and creative medium!

I decided to jump in with two feet and create a book trailer of my own. I want to share it with a bigger audience and gain experience of creating one myself so I can share the instruction with my students.
I was torn for a while trying to figure out which software app would be the best and most user-friendly to experiment with. At my school the primary students use iPads and the intermediate students use Chromebooks, so I had to make a choice on which platform to pursue. I chose the Chromebooks for two reasons; one of which is I own no Apple products of my own at home and I knew that we have a full class set of Chromebooks for project use. I wanted each student to have their own computer to dig a little deeper with the focus, planning and filmmaking to create their own book trailer.

I researched and sought out apps for education and presentations. I asked various colleagues for their favourites and settled on PowToon to create my book trailer. I  have never used the software before and I was very apprehensive before I began. I was quickly relieved to find how user-friendly and enjoyable it was to use. I'm sure my students could spend hours and hours perfecting their video as Powtoon has so many different options, templates and special effects.

After building my trailer, I realized that I needed to set up my own account with a email address to create with Powtoon, so I'll have to check with my district policies on student privacy. I want to ensure that my students are safe online and only give information that is acceptable.

I'm pleased with my book trailer and I know that I could probably spend an exorbitant amount of time making it as perfect as I wanted it to be, but we have a deadline! It is exciting and inspiring to be able to create something in the digital realm which seemed so easily to come together. I feel like my creative vision was successful. For someone who is not entirely confident with technology I was very pleased with the Powtoon platform and the final result of work.
